Backlit onyx and marble walls
In addition to magical colours and patterns, some marbles and most onyxes have a feature that enhances their beauty and multiplies their effect – they transmit light. The most famous example of the use of a rare raw material, whereby its beauty is underlined by light is the realisation in the Villa Tugendhat by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In fact, it was only later that the architect discovered that certain parts of the stone transmit sunlight during sunsets. Therefore, thanks to chance and the architect’s feeling for the raw material and detail, we can now create beautiful interior walls from most onyxes and some types of marble. Nowadays, Onyx is commonly used to complete interiors. Among the most famous is Macedonia onyx – much like the one in the Villa Tugendhat. Variations of orange onyx, green onyx from Pakistan and Turkish onyx are widely used. Since this raw material can be found all over the world, its range is large. We have onyxes in stock at our shop. With regard to onyx, almost everyone forms an association with light. For marble, this association is no longer so common. Probably because there are not that many with this feature. On the other hand, some of them are highly effective and beautiful. For example, Panda marble, when not lit, is very minimalist and effective with its black and white pattern. On the contrary, the light gives it tenderness and a touch of salmon pink. There are examples of the use of onyx and marble in our gallery, which we have in stock in our shop in Sluštice near Prague.
